About

This a detail taken from Copper Garden

Drawing and painting is something I have always done because I enjoy the process. Study, experience and constantly trying to stretch my skills through reappraisal.

I was fortunate to be able to continue my artwork during my years teaching and since moving to Tisbury, Wiltshire, have had more time as I no longer teach.

My studio is in the garden and backs on to fields allowing me to be able to bring the outside in whenever I wish.

My love of plants is reflected not just in my work but in my reasoning behind each picture. For me it is important to understand the geology of a place . I think of the layers below and above me; how plants arise and return to the soil; colours as they change in any season’s particular light; the quiet force of nature that one sees and hears when alone and still.

I like to find a place where I can sit with sketch book and camera. I am as interested in a vast expanse of land as I am in the intricate tapestries of texture and colour found close at my feet. Then home to work quickly, often in pencil and ink and then paint in oil.

I studied Fine Art at Newcastle University and Winchester School of Art. I have exhibited in local galleries and more recently have worked on commissions.

The painting on my home page is of the Goldfinches in my garden. This painting is now in its new home in Kenya. The image above is a detail taken from "Copper Garden".
